(ask for 'Right to Buy')

The Right to Buy (RTB) is a government scheme that we operate. It allows eligible council tenants to buy the home that they rent.

Sources of information

The government has produced a booklet that covers useful things to consider.

There is a government website just for the RTB.

You can contact the government's official Right to Buy Agent Service by phone, email or chat for free and impartial advice.

We suggest that you use these sources before you contact us and before you submit an application to buy your home.

Things to consider

Before you buy your home, you should consider that there are costs and new bills that you will be liable to pay.

Once you own your home, you will have to pay a mortgage, plus service charges if you buy a flat. There will also be insurance and repair or maintenance costs.

As part of buying your home, you will need to pay for a solicitor, conveyancing fees, stamp duty and land registry fees.

If you get housing benefit, you will no longer be able to claim this to pay your mortgage.
