Due to the latest information and advice about Coronavirus (COVID-19) we are having to temporarily suspend acceptance of new Right to Buy applications.

We also cannot process existing applications that require a valuation, due to our valuers being unable to visit properties. This will be the case whilst social distancing and self-isolation measures remain in force. We also cannot process requests relating to extra borrowing, re-mortgages, or selling your home back to us.

Applications that have been valued and/or have received an offer of sale can proceed as normal, although we will temporarily suspend any completion deadlines.

We are following government advice and updates about any impact on our services will be added here as soon as possible: http://newforest.gov.uk/article/19348/Coronavirus-Information-about-council-services

Right to Buy Booklet The Right to Buy (RTB) is a government scheme that we operate. It allows eligible council tenants to buy the home that they rent.

Sources of information

The government has produced a booklet that covers useful things to consider.

There is a government website just for the RTB.

You can contact the government's official Right to Buy Agent Service by phone, email or web chat. The Agent Service is free and they offer impartial advice.

We suggest that you use these sources before you contact us and before you submit an application to buy your home.

Things to consider

When you think about buying your home, you should consider that there are costs and new bills that you will be liable to pay.

Once you own your home, you will have to pay a mortgage, plus service charges if you buy a flat. There will also be buildings and content insurance, plus you are responsible for repair or maintenance costs.

As part of buying your home, you will need to pay for a solicitor, conveyancing fees, stamp duty and land registry fees.

If you get housing benefit, you will no longer be able to claim this to pay your mortgage.
