Forest pledge to carry on recycling
Release date: 4 March 2010
Following a cabinet meeting today (Wednesday 3 March), New Forest District Council remains committed to weekly refuse and recycling collections using black and clear sacks.
The council's pledge came as recycling plans for the next five years were put in the spotlight. Recent guidance from the Audit Commission told councils would be given poor inspection reports for not considering a fortnightly refuse scheme. Despite these pressures, the council is determined to build on the success of existing schemes in order to achieve challenging recycling targets.
Environment Portfolio Holder, Cllr Edward Heron said: "Over the years, New Forest residents have shown a tremendous commitment to recycling and to the local environment. While we are always very mindful of receiving good reports from the Audit Commission, and indeed we were commended for our service and low costs in the last report, the council considers local needs and the satisfaction of its residents more important."
The popular clear sack recycling scheme continues to deliver high levels of recycling and the garden waste collection scheme has attracted more customers than ever before.
There are over 100 glass recycling points in the New Forest, more clothing banks are being provided and battery recycling points are now available at all council offices and many local stores.
"I hope all householders take full advantage of the many opportunities that are available to recycle as much as we can. The message is definitely – Carry On Recycling!" said Cllr Heron.
