Internet safety advice for parents

Release date: 2 February 2010

New Forest parents are invited to find out how to keep their children safe when using the internet.

Police in New Milton are running a free drop-in advice session at New Milton's town council offices between 2pm and 4.15pm on Tuesday, February 9.

Parents will be given safety information about the possible risks involved when children go online. Officers and representatives from the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) will be on hand to answer their questions.

PC Karen Kingsnorth, who is organising the session, said: "If used properly, the internet can open up a range of educational and social opportunities for children of all ages. Hampshire Police want to ensure that parents are aware of the risks involved when their children use the internet so that they can help them to make sensible and informed choices about what they do, who they talk to and what they post on the internet."

This event is part of National Safer Internet Week, led by CEOP, from February 8 to February 14. It aims to raise awareness about how to keep children safe when they use the internet.

For more information and advice about internet safety, parents, teachers, carers and children can visit the CEOP website www.thinkuknow.co.uk
