Cemeteries Service

New Forest District Council administers and maintains cemeteries for burials and designated areas set aside for interment of ashes.

New Forest District Council Cemetery department is committed to providing an excellent customer service to the bereaved. The Cemeteries Service deals with burial bookings, memorial applications, legal transfers of the Exclusive Right of Burial and enquiries relating to the Cemeteries currently administered by New Forest District Council (NFDC).

The service of burial includes the administration for the booking and the burial, the preparation and completion of the burial at the time of interment, and the maintenance of statutory registers and records post interment.

There are no restrictions on who can be buried within the Cemeteries provided by this Council, however, those people who reside outside of the New Forest District will be charged the full fee for all Services, whilst residents of the area who have contributed to the Service, through payment of their council tax, will be charged at a reduced rate.

There are currently no crematoriums in the New Forest; the nearest crematoria are in Southampton, Eastleigh and Bournemouth . Cremated remains, however, can be interred within purchased NFDC graves, woodland graves, woodland ashes graves and within cremated remains plots. Scattering of ashes is possible within selected Cemeteries only.

Blackfield Cemetery graves can no longer be prepurchased  due to limited remaining space availability; those graves currently available are for immediate use only. However, the prepurchase of cremated remains plots are currently permissible within Blackfield. For alternative grave prepurchase arrangements, you may wish to select from one of New Forest District Council's other Cemeteries.

All New Forest District Council Cemeteries are open to the public, but please respect other visitors and the grounds as these are places of peace and tranquillity.

Burials may take place Monday to Friday between the hours of 9.30am and 3.00pm. Saturday burials are by arrangement only and premium fees apply. To arrange a burial please consult our current list of Registered Funeral Directors and Stonemasons to select your preferred choice of Funeral Director.
